Psalm for Deliverance

The following is not inspired Scripture.

For the Brethren.  A psalm of Samuel.

1 Rescue me, O Lord of Hosts;
  Come to my aid, O God Almighty;
2 For the king has set his face against me,
And my protector has become my foe.
3 He has inclined his ear to false counsel,
And has received false witnesses against me.
4 He has blown away my faithfulness like chaff
And regarded my good deeds as dung.
5 My transgressions are many, O Lord,
And the oceans could not contain the ink to write my sins,
6 Yet it is for righteousness that I am condemned;
Because I spoke the truth, I am judged a liar.
7 My spirit is crushed within me,
For his foot weighs heavily on my neck.
8 His heart is fat with indignation,
His eyes are blinded by the shadows of traitors.
9 In pride he rejects wisdom and discretion;
He refuses sound counsel lest he be thought a fool.
10 He has lifted his fist against the Almighty,
In the name of the Lord of Hosts he has established his own throne.
11 He declares, “It is I who make kings and destroy princes,
By my hand I establish justice and truth.
12 Nothing is hidden from my sight;
Who can oppose my counsel?”
13 Deal with him according to your righteousness, O Lord God my Redeemer,
For you alone are king of heaven and earth.
14 Confuse the words of his mouth;
Let his curses be the prophesies of Balaam.
15 Cause the sickness of Nebuchadnezzar to fall upon him,
And may the judgment of Belshazzar be his end.
17 Lay waste to his kingdom and destroy his strong towers,
May the devastation of Amalek be his reward.
18 For he has set himself against you like the prince of Tyre,
He has hardened his heart to your word like Pharoah.
19 My companions have abandoned me,
And my brothers have betrayed me,
20 But you, Lord God, are my shield and buckler;
The Lion of Judah will defend me.
21 The God of Joseph has seen my oppression,
And the God of Gideon will fight for me.
22 He who rules in Zion has spread his wings around me;
He has sent his Comforter to dwell within me.
23 Though I be cast into the fire I will not fear
For my deliverer will not abandon me to my enemies.
24 I will rejoice in my affliction that I might learn your precepts, O Lord,
I will give thanks in my oppression that I might know your peace;
25 For you have given your angels charge over me,
You have sent your archangel to answer my prayer.
26 The Lord my God is good and does good;
The God of Abraham keeps his promises to a thousand generations.

When Tragedy Strikes

In the wake of unspeakable loss following the Kerr County floods, the instinct to assign blame has surged almost as quickly as the river itself. But in a culture desperate to make sense of tragedy, are we asking the right questions? Drawing on Jesus’ words in Luke 13, this reflection challenges our default response to tragedy and calls us to look deeper—not outward in judgment, but inward in repentance.

The Trammell Travesty

At last night’s Astros-Cubs game, it wasn’t the stars who left the biggest impression—it was Taylor Trammell, a player with zeros across his stat line and a World Series ring he didn’t earn. His unlikely story reminded me that life isn’t always fair, but grace isn’t about fairness. Frequently, God gives blessings we didn’t expect or deserve—just to remind us He’s still writing the story, even when we feel benched.
